Because my wife’s job is in DC, I spend a fair amount of time here. And like all my travels, I try to find local cheese shops to visit. I’ve been to many of the usual suspects–Cowgirl Creamery, Cheesetique, many times. This visit though provided something new and unique–DC’s first urban cheesemaking operation.
Sona Creamery and Wine Bar is on Capitol Hill near Eastern Market and the co-owners, Conan and Gen, have spent considerable energy creating a regulatory framework that will enable them to import milk and make cheese in downtown, DC.
What was planned to be just a peak at the place on our way to Eastern Market turned into a leisurely brunch with great food and great conversation with Conan and Gen. They weren’t making cheese yet when we visited, but given the lengths they’ve come to get this far and their clear passion, a future visit is definitely in store.
