Thanksgiving is a great excuse to gobble gobble some delicious artisan cheese! We know selecting the right cheese for your holiday gatherings can be overwhelming, so we selected five of our favorites.

Choosing favorites is pretty darn tough when you are surrounded by so many delicious cheeses, but this is a short list of some of the finest in our fridge.  These five always taste exceptional and represent a wide range of styles and places of origin.

Sottocenare -Pasteurized Cow Milk. Italy

SotoccenareTruffles are the ultimate holiday indulgence, and Sottocenare al Tartufo stands out when it comes to truffle cheeses.  It has real truffles in the cheese, not just truffle oil, and its rind is coated with nutmeg, cinnamon, anise, coriander, licorice, clove, allspice, and fennel, then rubbed in truffle oil. It’s a labor intensive process that produces a delicate, aromatic and unusual cheese. It adds a bit of luxury to any cheese tray and is a key ingredient in making the best truffle mashed potatoes ever.

Delice de Bourgogne – Pasteurized Cow Milk. France

Second only to truffles as the ultimate holiday cheese is a triple crème cheese.  They are made by adding cream to the full fat cow’s milk as the cheese is made.  This is unapologetically rich and the closest you will get to eating butter without actually eating butter. But it’s more than butter thanks to its bloomy rind (think Brie) that adds an earthy, complex flavor.

Cabot Clothbound Cheddar – Pasteurized Cow Milk. Cellars at Jasper Hill, Vermont

It’s the quintessential American cheddar with a touch of rustic from its cloth bandage. This Thanksgiving go-to cheese is a crowd pleaser that doesn’t dumb it down, but goes all out! BIG, bold, savory flavors await the eaters of this phenomenally nutty cave-aged cheddar.

Harbison – Pasteurized Cow Milk. Cellars at Jasper Hills, Vermont

harbisonHarbison was named Best American Cheese in the World Cheese Awards and one taste shows why.  It’s got the custard, eggy flavor of a perfectly ripened brie, with a woodsy, earthy flavor that comes from the strips of spruce it’s wrapped in.  The presentation on this one is a STUNNER! You slice off the op and scoop it out with a spoon onto a cracker or baguette or straight into your mouth.

Stilton – Pasteurized Cow Milk. England

Stilton is one of England’s best loved cheeses and a holiday classic.  Only six dairies are licensed to make this delicious blue cheese, and once it’s made, a committee examines every wheel to determine whether it’s good enough to earn the Stilton name.  Traditionally, this cheese has been paired with sherry and port wine so we like to pour port over the cheese.  It’s a delicious and impressive display technique.
